Grievance Committee Overview
The Grievance Committee safeguards Members’ contractual rights by administering the grievance process in accordance with the CBA, TWU Constitution, Local 579 Bylaws, and applicable labor laws. The committee ensures grievances are handled fairly, consistently, confidentially, and in a timely manner.
Committee Member Responsibilities
- Assist with investigations, documentation, and case preparation;
- Communicate with Members under the direction of the Chair;
- Support grievance processing through contractual steps;
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records.
Committee Chair Responsibilities
- Chair all Grievance Committee meetings and hearings;
- Assign grievances and monitor timelines and progress;
- Oversee grievance intake, evaluation, and Member communications;
- Prepare mediation packets, arbitration dockets, and settlement documentation;
- Coordinate representation at grievance meetings, mediations, and arbitrations;
- Train and mentor Shop Stewards and Committee Members;
- Identify trends and recommend corrective or bargaining strategies;
- Maintain accurate, confidential grievance records.
Qualifications:
- Active Member in good standing;
- Strong working knowledge of the CBA;
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills;
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Adobe tools;
- Ability to remain impartial, professional, and confidential.
Time Commitment:
Extensive and variable; may include work outside regular duty hours.
