Our Professional Standards Committee provides a confidential avenue for our Members to seek peer-to-peer support in resolving interpersonal conflicts. We strongly encourage utilizing this committee as a first step, as it offers a constructive approach to conflict resolution without the risk of involving management and potential disciplinary actions.

Professional Standards Overview

The Professional Standards Committee promotes a culture of professionalism, respect, and accountability among Flight Attendants by addressing interpersonal issues through education, peer-to-peer engagement, and informal resolution. The committee serves as a neutral resource focused on resolving concerns before they escalate, preserving working relationships, and strengthening unity within the Membership.

The Professional Standards Committee is non-disciplinary and non-punitive in nature. It does not investigate misconduct, issue discipline, or replace contractual, grievance, or Company processes. Instead, it works to foster awareness, communication, and professional conduct consistent with Union values and workplace expectations.

General Qualifications

  • Good organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to:
    •  Be an empathic listener;
    • Conduct interviews and gather information;
    • Remain neutral and free of conflict of interest throughout an investigation;
    • Write and edit case reports; 
    • Attend regular Professional Standard meetings;
    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and personal information;
  • Adherence to committee policies, procedures, and standards of ethical conduct.

Committee Member Responsibilities

Professional Standards Committee Members serve as trained peer resources who assist in addressing professionalism concerns in a confidential, respectful, and impartial manner.

Primary Duties:

  • Receive and review professionalism-related concerns submitted by Members;
  • Engage in peer-to-peer outreach to address issues through education and constructive dialogue;
  • Facilitate informal resolution of interpersonal conflicts when appropriate;
  • Promote awareness of professional conduct expectations and Union values;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and neutrality at all times;
  • Document non-identifying interactions for internal tracking purposes only;
  • Redirect matters that fall outside the committee’s scope (e.g., harassment, discrimination, contract violations, safety issues) to the appropriate Union committee or Company process.

Committee Chair Responsibilities

The Professional Standards Committee Chair provides leadership, oversight, and coordination to ensure the committee operates effectively, ethically, and within its defined scope.

Primary Responsibilities:

Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead the Professional Standards Committee and assign matters to Committee Members;
  • Ensure committee actions remain non-disciplinary and within established scope;
  • Support and mentor Committee Members in peer-to-peer engagement best practices.

Case Management & Confidentiality

  • Oversee intake, assignment, and closure of Professional Standards matters;
  • Ensure confidentiality, neutrality, and fairness throughout all interactions;
  • Maintain secure, non-identifying records for internal tracking and trend analysis.

Education & Outreach

  • Coordinate professionalism education initiatives and awareness campaigns;
  • Collaborate with other Union committees when appropriate to promote respectful workplace practices.

Reporting & Coordination

  • Provide high-level, non-identifying updates to Union leadership as appropriate;
  • Identify recurring themes or trends and recommend preventive or educational strategies.

Confidentiality & Scope

  • All Professional Standards matters are handled with strict confidentiality;
  • Issues outside the committee’s scope are promptly redirected to the appropriate Union committee, Company process, or external resource.

Time Commitment:

Variable and dependent on case volume, outreach efforts, and committee initiatives.
